Google’s revenue is totalled in billions of dollars from the sales of keyword related advertising. A large chunk of this revenue is derived from visitors clicking on Google Adsense advertisements carried on web sites. Google charges the advertiser each time an ad is clicked. It’s called pay-per-click advertising.
Every time someone clicks and opens one of these advertisements, Google pays the web site publisher a commission. This commission can vary from $0.20 to $1 per click or more depending on how much the advertiser has paid for the keywords. Some keywords are more competitive than others and therefore carry a higher price which translates into a higher commission.
Google Adsense commission can be quite lucrative if you can attract large numbers of visitors (referred to as ‘traffic’ by internet marketers) to your site and who will click on the ads. For example, if you had a visitor click on 5 of the ads shown on your website you would earn (at say $0.20 per click) $1 from Google. Imagine that you had 100 visitors each clicking 5 ads per day your income would be $100 a day. Not a bad income, eh?
I would like some of that, you might say. Well, you’ve first got to have your own web site with interesting content that will attract visitors. Then you have to apply to Google Adsense for acceptance. It is a straightforward procedure and provided that you have good content it is unlikely that Google will turn you down.
Once accepted, you cut and paste some code into the page or pages where you want the ads to show. Google ads will then appear, usually relating to the content of your web site. This is called contextual advertising.
